New York City played host to the VMAs and the Met Gala this week, putting on an exciting parade of red carpet fashions. Jennifer Pittorino reports her top celebrity looks from the events.

The Video Music Awards red carpet is historically known for presenting some wild creations, and 2021 was no exception.

Not to be outdone, the Met Gala raised the fashion stakes with this year’s theme, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, producing many iconic looks.

Here are some of the best dressed from both events.

Megan Fox

Fox put it all on display for the VMAs in a bold, sheer Thierry Mugler gown. Fox was accompanied by partner and VMA nominee Machine Gun Kelly.

Fox then showed up her previous VMAs look for her Met Gala debut in a ravishing red gown by Dundas, complete with a thigh-high slit and cutouts that perfectly accentuated her curves.

Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X is not one to shy away from a bold statement, whether it be in a music video or on the red carpet, and his lavender double-breasted blazer complete with a train did just that.

Following in Lady Gaga’s footsteps from the 2019 Met, Lil Nas put on a whole show for the cameras. Donned in three separate golden looks by Versace, Lil Nas made an opening statement in a velvet robe before stripping down to an armoured suit and finishing the moment in a black bodysuit embellished with gold.

Jennifer Lopez

JLo graced the VMAs with a black mini dress by David Koma with ties up the long-sleeved bodice and sides of the sparkly skirt, complete with clear strappy heels.

For the Met, she chose to channel Western rodeo cowgirl chic in her Ralph Lauren gown that featured a thigh-high slit, statement necklace and faux fur wrap, completed with a black cowboy hat.

Billie Eilish

Eilish walked the VMA red carpet in an all-black ensemble comprised of a baggy sweater, skirt and combat boots, seeming to stick to her usual comfortable attire.

In a big contrast, the 19-year-old co-host was the belle of the Met ball in a stunning Oscar de la Renta gown. The blush peach tulle gown was inspired by Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly and featured an enormous train. Interestingly, Eilish only agreed to wear the gown provided the fashion giant discontinued selling fur products.

Here’s some other Met Gala looks worth mentioning.

Kim Kardashian

Kardashian stepped out in a Balenciaga haute couture gown, complete with a shroud covering her entire head and a long flowing train. Plus, a 75-inch ponytail for added drama.

Kim might have disguised her features, but her famous silhouette let everyone know it was her. The controversial look embodied making yourself known while disguising yourself—not many people could step out on a red carpet completely covered and be instantly recognised.

Lupita Nyong’o

Nyong’o wore a Versace gown made entirely of denim panels, a fabric very heavily associated with America.

The designers said they were inspired by old Western movies that featured a femme fatale—a strong, powerful, glamorous and fierce woman—everything Nyong’o represents.

Lili Reinhart

Designed by Christian Siriano, Reinhart’s gown was baby pink and asymmetrical with a long train embellished from shoulder to toe in each of the 50 states’ flowers. This kind of creativity is what we hope to see coming out of the Met each year, timeless but paying homage to the theme.

Imaan Hammam

Model Hammam stunned in a Versace creation that featured a sheer bodice and tulle gown. The entire dress was star printed and utterly gorgeous, one of many sparkly gowns that made an appearance, but Hamman knew how to stand out.

Kendall Jenner

Jenner wore one of the most daring dresses of the evening as she channelled Audrey Hepburn, who she fondly referred to as a classic American movie star.

Her glittering dress resembled the one worn by Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Designed by Givenchy, the sheer dress featured thousands of diamonds draped in a panel-style down the entire gown. Jenner completed with a diamond choker and sheer gloves.

Iman

The supermodel completely stole the show in a gold custom bustier and trousers, paired with a feather cage overskirt and bespoke matching headpiece. The golden masterpiece was a collaborative design by Dolce & Gabbana and Harris Reed and was inspired by the ballroom culture of America’s golden age.

Emily Ratajkowski

Ratajkowski was every bit the American rose in her Vera Wang gown with an impressive shoulder piece. The lace dress was the perfect shade of red with sheer cutouts and delicate flower detailing.

Yara Shahidi

In custom Dior, Shahidi looked ethereal in a strapless gown embroidered with intricate beading, a thin belt and a long sheer train. The dreamy gown was inspired by American-French entertainer Josephine Baker.

Maluma

Not many men seem to put much effort into their Met Gala looks, so Maluma’s red leather Versace look was a welcome sight. The classic Western look was complete with red cowboy boots, gold rhinestones and embellishments on the jacket and pants.

Amanda Gorman

Gorman, another Met co-chair, wowed in a strapless electric blue gown that featured a sweetheart neckline, mini hem and a flowing draping overlayer. Designed by Vera Wang, the floaty gown was embellished with tiny diamonds and inspired by the Statue of Liberty.

Rihanna

Finishing off both the red carpet and our list is none other than Rihanna, who closed the night in a ruffled Balenciaga overcoat and matching beanie. The voluminous gown was said to be a chic interpretation of the All-American style. Rihanna completed her look with the best accessory of the night, her beau A$AP Rocky.
